The Oath

The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

H. L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy, 1926

The Madison Conservative has deep ties to the military. While in no way a prerequisite, every member has served. We believe in the Constitution, and in each other. We know we can trust each other and that all we ever need is our word. We are people of conviction and honor.

Even those who are not Cubs fans.

This information matters in the context of taking an oath. An oath is not a transitory concept. If you give your word, you mean it, and it’s for life. We took an oath when we joined the military, to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution, against all enemies, foreign and domestic. It did not have an expiration date or an opt-out  clause. We swore to our God and the deal was done.

Solid, clear and unbreakable.

And so it should be with anyone who takes an oath.

Like elected leaders who take an oath to honor the United States Constitution. All of it, not just selective parts they choose.

And yet governors, mayors, council people, and other elected leaders seem to dismiss their oath because they dislike the president or in the name of political expediency.

If you disagree with a policy, legally change the law. You do not get to encourage mob rule and accept violence as a means to an end.

YOU GAVE YOUR WORD.

Love him or hate him, President Trump is acting constitutionally. Our elected leaders seem to ignore that.

We are in no way advocating blind allegiance to Trump. We have a Constitution, and all actions of government should be held up to legal scrutiny. There is a process for it. Yes, it sometimes slows things to a crawl, but welcome to American democracy.

Those in office need to understand that reality. They swore an oath to it.

If someone gives you their word and breaks it, they cannot be trusted.

EVER>

And so it should be with our elected officials. They break their oath, they should be quickly voted out of office.

Questioning "No Kings"

The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

H. L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy, 1926

The reviews are in.

It’s the questions that remain.

The “NO KINGS” nationwide protests were, by all accounts, peaceful. As a Constitutional platform, our interest should end there. As citizens, we have a right to “peaceably assemble to petition for a redress of their grievances”

Yet the entire exercise seems to demand clarification. In no particular order:

Who is the king?

What are the grievances against the king?

What is the proposed solution?

If Donald Trump is  the King, he kind of sucks at it. If he was a king, the protest would not have taken place, as a king would not permit it. Furthermore, a King would not engage in abiding by court decisions. Trump has followed every court decision that  has gone against him. Surely Joe Biden could give him lessons on ignoring the Supreme Court.

Cancelling student loans, anyone?

By following the Constitution and respecting the courts, Trump has removed himself from monarchial consideration.

If the issue is as being reported, the actions of I.C.E, then there is a case to be made. But the focus of their wrath should not be with Trump but with Congress. The laws being followed are acts of Congress and pre-date Trump, often by decades.

The mob’s solution? Spit on law enforcement officers who are following the law and protecting the Constitution.

Madness.

So while we applaud the non-violence, we are left to ask:

What was it all about?

Exquisite Idiocy

The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

H. L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy, 1926

Chuck… is an idiot.

My aunt may take exception with this comment as she is a firm believer in respect. Fair enough.

Charles Ellis Schumer, Democratic United States Senator from New York and currently United States Senate Minority Leader… is an Idiot.

This comment is not based upon his intractability in the budget battle. His statements  concerning how the Democrats are winning the public relations war is not the mark of an idiot. His lack of concern relative to the pain he personally is inflicting on the American people in the furtherance of his ego is not the mark of an idiot. Preserving his power at all costs and to avoid a primary challenge is not idiotic.

Chuck’s entire rationale is stupid. His actions are purely political and will no doubt leave him in the dustbin of history. The elctorate will serve political justice to Chuck and it will not be pretty.

So this post is not about the absolute failure of Chuck as a leader.

It is about the fact that Chuck is an idiot.

To wit:

There is a video circulating that has Chuck discussing the three branches of government. A most senior legislator. A man in the hierarchy of the United States government. A man who has sworn to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of The United States. This was not an errant slip, but part of a floor speech.

Three parts?

The House, Senate and White House.

He omitted the Judiciary, the entire court system.

Chuck is an idiot.
