On Behalf Of My Friends

The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

H. L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy, 1926

Dear Mr. President,

We apologize for the intrusion on your time, but as we move past the five-month mark of your administration, there are a few questions that need to be answered. As Memorial Day is just around the corner, and given it’s a three-day holiday weekend, we had hoped you’d have some time for answering our questions.

Truth be told, these questions are really on behalf of my friends.

Here’s the thing about my friends, Mr. President. Not all of them are here in America. Some of them have relocated to points around the globe. I’m sure they’d really much prefer to be back here in America, but sometimes things happen and you make the choice to leave home for something bigger than yourself.

My friends don’t all look alike. We pretty much run the gamut of colors, but none of that has ever really mattered to any of us.

My friends and I don’t really worship together. We know that some of us call our God by different names, and some don’t even have any type of religious faith, if you can believe that. Again, none of us really care about such things. We’re all close friends, and between real friends, there are no differences, just common threads that bind us. Some of my friends are men, some of them women, and the funny thing is we all respect each other, regardless of anatomy. To be honest, we are really close, so much more than family, but the closest thing we can do to express our closeness it to call each other brother and sister.

We’re kind of strange that way, according to so many folks smarter than my friends and me.

I’ll get back to my friends in a moment, but onward to the questions. Trust me, they are not trick, gotcha questions. We’re really just asking for a little clarification.

In no particular order of importance,

1 – If the XL Pipeline needed to be cancelled for, well, for whatever reason you had, why did you just lift sanctions against Russia and allow Russia to build their pipeline to Germany. That surely can’t be right.

2 – How do we pay for all of your spending, now at almost 6 trillion dollars. My friends wanted to leave their children and grandchildren a better, stronger nation. Can they have that if they’re paying off this ever-growing debt?

3 – Do you support Chicago mayor Lightfoot’s decision to spurn reporters solely based on the color of their skin? As my friends understood it, the goal has been to judge people by the content of their character and not the color of one’s skin. Did we get that wrong?

4 – Speaking on that, do you agree with those, like supporters of the 1619 project and Critical Race Theory, who espouse teaching children that white people are inherently evil and that people of color are inherently victims? Sorry to ask, but that sure sounds crazy to my friends and me.

5 – We understand that the vaccines are free, but anyone receiving one must show a government issued I.D. How is it that a required I.D. is permissible for vaccines, but is racist for voting? The political left is unwavering in the stand that I.D.’s are hard to get for some citizens and thus racist. Does your administration agree with that, and if so, doesn’t that mean you’re ok letting Covid kill people solely for want of an I.D.?

6 – On Covid, what exactly is your stance on masks? You stated during your campaign that you would follow the science. Science says if you have been vaccinated, the masks can go. Nancy Pelosi is fining vaccinated people for not wearing a mask on the House floor, and you’ve been seen wearing a mask outdoors after announcing it was no longer necessary. It sure is getting confusing.

7 – Are we still allies with Israel? A lot of the political left sure seems upset with America being a supporter of Israel.

8- You appointed Vice-President Harris to deal with the illegal immigration crisis on the border. It would be helpful if she gave us any information on the plan to deal with this crisis. Maybe a word or two from you on the subject would help.

Well, it seems we have a whole lot more questions, but we don’t want to overstay our welcome.

One last note, and it is a humble request. If you have the opportunity, could you ask America to take some time in the next 8 days to stop by and say hi to my friends? You don’t have to look too hard. My friends are everywhere. It would mean a lot for them to be remembered. They sure did their part for America. My friends all share the belief in the greatness of America, and cannot understand your comments on America being a racist nation.

Just thought I’d ask, Mr. President, on behalf of my friends, some of them pictured here at Arlington National Cemetery.

Article 1, Section 9, Clause 8

The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

H. L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy, 1926

The Madison Conservative has been noticing a troubling trend while watching so-called news media the last few months. The phenomenon is not limited to any one news outlet, but rather is infecting all news coverage.

The Biden administrations’ chaotic and incoherent policy choices have been ripe fodder for the 24-hour news cycle. While watching the coverage, the United States Constitution and the wisdom of the framers and the founders again comes to the forefront, and America must take heed of what has been happening.

Consider for a moment Article 1, Section 9, Clause 8, which states:

“No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”

That reads rather clearly, yet the media and former government employees seem to require titles as a God-given right.

Every evening, on every news channel, a former congressperson, senator or office holder appears on camera and is addressed with their former title. If you listen, you will hear “what is your opinion on that, senator?” when they no longer hold that office.  By all means, everybody has a right to express their thoughts on any given issue. however, when the electorate send a senator packing, the first thing they should leave behind is their title. Our founding fathers were insightful to the lure of titular honors. They created the framework for the greatest nation the world has ever known on three basic beliefs.

A nation of the PEOPLE.

A nation by the PEOPLE.

A nation FOR the PEOPLE.

There would be no familial lines of power, no divine right of governance, no subservience to a government not created by the PEOPLE.

For those on the political left who feel the Constitution contains random ‘suggestions’, or who spout idiocies that “no amendment is absolute”, the Madison Conservative highly recommends that they read that most august document.

Spoiler alert: it begins with the words ‘WE THE PEOPLE” written in larger typeface than any other part of our founding document, signaling that this nation was to be established with the foundation that her citizenry would be equal. There would be no kings, princes, dukes, earls, etcetera, etcetera.

And yet, our society bows down to former senators, secretaries of this or that department, as though there was an inherent quality of superiority in their being simply by having held a government position. Mr., Mrs., Ms., all seem to work fine for the electorate. We allow our fellow citizens to borrow their titles of position until their service is over. The founders and framers believed that Americans would offer to serve, and then return to their individual pursuits of happiness. Constantly bestowing their former titles upon them after they have left office only fuels the elective class to believe their own press clippings.

We should thank them for their efforts and then give them a one-way ticket out of Washington D.C. to their hometown and let them live under their policies and laws. Granting them lifetime stature of a former titled employee is madness.

How many businesses address their former emplyees with their former titles?

As with all things, the Madison Conservative believes in certain exceptions to certain rules. Anyone who has served as President of the United States should retain the respectful title of Mr. or madame President, regardless of party or record of accomplishment.

As Americans, we understand the need to respect the office if not the officeholder.

That is, after all, the American way.

Nuts!

The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

H. L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy, 1926

There can be little debate that the American psyche has been built upon the mindset of individual freedom. From the first shot fired in the War For Independence, America has been driven by the belief that this greatest nation the world has ever known did not take to the bluster and threats of King George. The motto “Don’t Tread On Me’ exemplified the new nations attitude to the attempts by the British crown to bring the colonists to heel. Throughout our history, the American Mindset has been exemplified in such pithy comments as ‘I have not yet begun to fight’ to the ultimate attitude of ‘Nuts’.

(we will not explain those two comments, as we believe everyone should already know them.)

In short, Americans have always spat in the face of bullies, who, to a one, are actually the biggest of cowards.

This preamble brings us to the comments of President Joe Biden on May 13th, 2021.

The president announced that the CDC had issued guidance that those citizens who were fully vaccinated could take their masks off, both for outdoor and indoor use, and toss them into the trash.

As an aside, and the Madison Conservative will repeat this as often as is necessary, the reason that Biden can claim, falsely, success with the COVID – 19 virus is because of the herculean efforts of President Donald J. Trump. Biden had those 200 million doses to give to Americans because Trump pre-purchased them so that once available, they could immediately be dispensed. Biden continually lies about the effects of his leadership on vaccines. We have addressed this in great detail in previous posts, and thus we will not repeat it again here, save to say that Trump deserves ALL the credit. Biden, who initially stated his distrust of “Trump vaccines” is now attempting to steal all credit.

Sorry, Mr. President. Like so much else you have said and done since taking office, you have it absolutely wrong.

But we digress.

When making the announcement on the modification to the mask mandates, he made a direct threat to Americans.

As we have previously noted, The Madison Conservative takes no stand on vaccines. In the land of the free because of the brave, the decision to take the vaccine or not is a personal choice. Yet Biden has decided to opt for unilaterally making the decision for all Americans. He stated that one MUST wear the mask UNTIL one is vaccinated.

Excuse us?

The President has now usurped personal health decisions to his whim? What is sadly missing is the outcry from the media and the political left.

The mantra when abortion is discussed by those parties, is completely unambiguous:

“My body, my choice”.

Yet not a murmur when the administration says no return to normalcy for those who do not kneel and take the vaccines. If Biden is successful in ostracizing people for sport, where does it end?

There are numerous reasons individuals might choose to accept responsibility for their own lives. And in the spirit of America, those reasons are nobody’s damn business.

We are curious about under  exactly what constitutional logic is Biden attempting to enforce ‘Get vaccinated or mask up forever’? We have had the Madison Conservative research team scouring every line of the United States Constitution and they have failed to uncover any such presidential powers.

Dear Mr. Biden,

NUTS!

Mothers Day 2021

The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

H. L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy, 1926

(ed. note: before reading further, we acknowledge that all of our Moms, Aunts, Grandmothers and every other woman in our lives, are obviously at the top of our individual lists. Consider what is written below is more a second-best commentary.)

George Washington is universally accepted as earning the title of ‘Father’ of America, being the general who led the fledgling nation to victory against England in the Revolutionary War, and then being elected to the office of the presidency as the America’s first constitutionally empowered chief executive. His wisdom set the tone for the new nation, and his choice to refuse a position of ‘President for Life’ provided a standard which all subsequent presidents followed, save for Franklin Roosevelt.

On this Mother’s Day, the question begs to be answered: who would qualify as the ‘Mother’ of America? While Martha Washington, as the nation’s inaugural First Lady did little of public note to be rewarded with the sobriquet. Dolly Madison, who served as official White House hostess for both Thomas Jefferson and then her husband, provided a standard for future first ladies, but again lacks the public record of involvement in the formation of the greatest nation the world has ever seen.

The Madison Conservative would propose that the true ‘Mother of America’ honor be bestowed upon Abigail Adams. Truly no other woman of the revolutionary era had as much to do with policy and substantive input as Abigail. The letters between her and John Adams show a woman intent on insuring that democracy come to America, and was a critical sounding board for her husband as his involvement in the War for Independence grew.

Consider the following official biography from the Abigail Adams website and we are sure all will agree that she has earned her place as Mother of America.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms’ of America, past, present and future!

ABIGAIL SMITH ADAMS

1744-1818

Abigail Adams was born November 11, 1744 in Weymouth, to Elizabeth Quincy Smith and Reverend William Smith, pastor of Weymouth’s First Church.

Like most girls of her time, she did not receive a formal education, but took advantage of her father’s library and studied the Bible, history, philosophy, essays and poetry.  Abigail’s mother and grandmother Quincy taught her social graces, as well as homemaking and handiwork skills.  Such a background helped her to become a keen political observer, prolific writer, and influential First Lady.

On October 25, 1764 Abigail married John Adams, a Harvard graduate pursuing a law career.  Their marriage was one of mind and heart, producing three sons and two daughters, and lasting for more than half a century.  They first lived on John’s farm in Braintree, and later in Boston.  Long separations kept them apart, when John traveled as a circuit lawyer and later, when John served as delegate to the Continental Congress, envoy abroad, and elected officer.

Abigail struggled alone with wartime shortages, lack of income, and difficult living conditions.  She ran the household, farm, and educated her children.  Abigail’s letters to John were strong, witty and supportive.  The letters, which have been preserved, detail her life during revolutionary times, and describe the many dangers and challenges she faced as our young country fought to become independent.  Most of all, the letters tell of her loneliness without her “dearest friend,” her husband John.

Abigail followed John to his posts in Paris in 1784 and Great Britain in 1785, always observing and commenting upon politics, customs and society.  They returned to a newly acquired house in Braintree (now part of Quincy) that would remain their home for the rest of their lives.  From 1789 to 1801, Abigail, as wife of the Vice President and then as First Lady, became a trusted and influential political advisor to John, while she also fulfilled her role in official entertaining.  Her unwavering support and encouragement of her husband in his career was apparent, as she fearlessly expressed her opinions in private and in public.

Abigail and John retired to Quincy in 1801, and for 17 years enjoyed the companionship that public life had long denied them.  Abigail died on October 28, 1818, and is buried in the United First Parish Church of Quincy beside her husband, who died on July 4, 1826.

Abigail Adams is further distinguished as the first American woman honored as the wife of one U. S. President and the mother of another.  Her husband John Adams, 2nd President, served from 1797 to 1801, and their son, John Quincy Adams, 6th President, served from 1825 to 1829.

Intelligent and broadminded, Abigail Smith Adams was often ahead of her time with many of her ideas. She opposed slavery, believed in equal education for boys and girls, and practiced what she learned as a child - the duty of the fortunate is to help those who are less fortunate.

Thank you again President Washington, For The Reminder & The Warning

The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

H. L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy, 1926

Washington politics has been obsessed as of late with the political standing of Rep. Liz Cheney. The Madison Conservative takes no position on the topic as it has no Constitutional merit. It does, however, bring to the forefront a more critical issue about American government.

To wit:

There is an axiom that holds that if you repeat something often enough it will become accepted as a truth, regardless of its actual veracity. One of the more glaring examples of this, in the context of American democracy, is the general belief that this country is based upon a two party political system.

This perpetually perpetrated fraud of fact is simply not true.

President Washington, in his famous farewell address, clearly expressed his concerns to the young nation of the “baneful effects of the spirit of party… it serves to distract the Public Councils, and enfeeble the Public Administration”. Our first chief executive feared for the embryonic republic; he had seen first-hand the splintering among those in his administration as they had jockeyed for positions of political power.

There is no language, explicit or implicit, delineating that the United States government will be divided between and amongst merely two political parties. The impending danger to our nation is that the two dominant parties have so ensnared the election process to their advantage that any viable alternative is deemed a “third party” candidate, and they decry the populace of ‘throwing away their vote” on such candidates. They have developed and maintain an election system so byzantine and outright ridiculous they have in effect inoculated themselves from any real assault on their political power.  In a country of 300 million plus, it is ridiculous to believe that there are but two elective options from which to choose a representative leadership. A thriving democratic republic must embrace the full spectrum of ideas, and people to speak in support of those beliefs.     We cannot accept that we must choose from a menu which consists only of one item from column A, and only one item from column B.

The founders specifically wrote the Constitution to be free of and to avoid all manner of political dogma; we engage in it at our own peril.

The Constitution speaks only that each chamber shall choose its officers. It makes no mention of political appointees; yet we blindly accept that ‘majority leaders’, ‘minority leaders’ ‘whips’ and such are and should be part of the official government. They are not, but are compensated for these additional ‘duties’, responsibilities that serve only the party, not the people.

If we are to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity” we must be ever vigilant against accepting blindly what we are told is fact about our democratic republic. The Constitution is available to any citizen to read and comprehend. Democracy needs to be thought of as a verb; to accept it as a passive term is to risk    falling into a default form of two-party political autocracy.

This is what President Washington expressed concern over, and the warning we must heed.

With All Due Respect, Mr. President...(part three)

The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

H. L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy, 1926

For the last few days, we have been discussing President Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress on April 28th, 2021. We believe much of the speeches content is both absurd and incoherent. The political left has been fawning over the irresponsible funding proposals and the absolute lack of bipartisan unity Biden has lied about since his inauguration. These types of speeches are crafted by a team of political operatives, providing a roadmap for the Presidents political policies and goals.

This address should scare the American people to their core. Like much of the left’s agenda, Biden is not listening to what he is saying, and the stenographic press will never demand clarifications.

The Madison Conservative does not take a position on global warming – excuse us – climate change. The hyperbole around the issue merely gives us pause to consider what the actual goals are in addressing a situation we are told will kill the planet. At four billion years old, give or take a millennium, the planet seems rather strong and has withstood graver issues beyond the internal combustion engine. The data is ever changing, so we are concerned when politicians claim the issue is settled science. Few situations in science are static. As a point of personal privilege, it would be akin to stating that while the Mets are in first and the Cubs are in last, such a situation will continue throughout the season with no variation at all. Would anybody accept the government saying the season was over with still five months to play? Of course not. Everybody would know the Cubs are going to win it all.

But I digress.

Biden made an extraordinary statement during the speech about climate change. His position is that it was imperative that the United States rejoin the Paris Accords on climate.

Why?

It has no hard limits on anything, but merely sets ‘goals’ for each nation. The most troubling aspect of all climate change proclamations is that not a single proposal defines success. There is no goal line, no point of finality. The political left uses things like the Paris accords to transfer wealth from citizens to those in power, ostensibly to help save the planet. This is the propaganda of things like the Accords. There is no enforcement mechanism, no penalties, for failure to meet those random goals. President Biden is willing to dismantle our standing of energy independence to look good in front of the world. He will hasten economic hardships on this country for appearance sake. China and India, the two largest carbon emitters, have said it’s a goal, and they’d consider it. They don’t seem too concerned about how their attitude appears to the world. America does not have its own air and climate. It is interdependent with the world. Which makes what Biden said next so incredible.

“If we do everything perfectly, it’s not going to ultimately matter.”

(source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EmdWnR4ty8 )

With all due respect Mr. President, are you serious? In the middle of an incoherent speech, you provide an incomprehensible agenda based on how our actions will look to our adversaries and enemies? In a nation founded on the freedom of the individual, your goal is to make this nation subservient to appearances?

Mr. President, we ask you to consider an alternative. You have a national economy fueled by capitalism and freedom. Turn it loose on climate change.

We do not ask for any credit. Feel free to affix your name to it and call it The Biden Plan.

Consider.

Instead of funneling trillions of hard-earned taxpayer dollars down the drain, propose a 10 year plan in which the company, organization or garage based scientist that discovers a viable renewable fuel source will enjoy tax-free status for the life of the company. Provide for purchase of the patent and lease the technology out to anybody who wants it. It can be the ultimate example of how a free people solve problems without becoming wards of the state. It would be a shining example of how to solve problems.

Our adversaries and enemies will still hate us for our freedoms, but we’ll look great doing it.
